Data were collected from classroom lesson transcripts available through existing professional learning resources for math teachers. These transcripts were gathered from several sources, including Inside Mathematics, TIMSS 1999, Video Mosaic, and anonymized TalkBack-study lessons. Each lesson was reviewed before it was included.

Data processing
The original transcripts were cleaned and standardized into .csv files. Transcription artifacts such as background-noise markers were removed.
Each sentence was annotated by two human annotators for "talk moves", or statements meant to move a class toward discussion and true understanding. Three types of talk moves were annotated: 1) accountability to the learning community, 2) ensuring purposeful coherent, and productive group discussion, and 3) accountability to rigorous thinking.
Some of the data is from as early as 1993 and collected across multiple countries. Use Subset 2 for the most recent data collected in the US only. Metadata for each transcript is available in Datasheet for Public Release.xlsx.
Appropriate uses and limitations
Models trained on this dataset may only be able to detect the three types of talk moves represented in this dataset and may struggle to generalize to other types of classroom moves.
